creative work

I currently find myself in a new creative boost, fresh air dancing in my head, I have organised new collaborations, am working on big shooting plans and keep buying new pieces of kit, most of which not necessarily camera stuff, but which go in my bag and in the boot of my car for my studio or location work....

I have always loved to shoot floral work, be it flowers in their natural state, arrangements or models in flower crowns.  I do like to add flowers to enhance the subject for a bohemian feel, depending what the subject is of course!

Today I share I simple shot of flowers from my garden, multi coloured poppies and beautifully bold cosmos, dancing in bokeh, srcreaming colour.  Did you notice I love colour, the vibrancy of life?

Hope you like this work - I look forward to publishing more images in this style soon...

The Siren

It's looking more winter than autumn out there today and I thought of fishing out work that will hopefully take your imagination somewhere warm and far away.

This is a project I had been wanting to do for a while.  I wasn't sure I would get the mood that I wanted, from what is essentially a beach shoot, so I had a lot of thinking to do.

The beautiful Brazilian, Norwich based model, Amanda Santos, was the clear choice for my subject, her graceful curves flowing with the curves in the sand, and the angle of the sun creating the right amount of shadow to add definition to what would have been otherwise a flat image.  There is a distinct air of bravery of the subject who seems to be fighting all that is happening around her but also a beauty and command which is somewhat surreal...

The final image was created by stitching a series of shots to be able to create the level of detail required.

Kudos go to Amanda for her patience in the blazing sun and to my friend Rainbo for the help with sculpturing the waves and sky.

Amanda Santos as a Siren photographed for an editorial shoot

I hope you like the final image .... and please do leave your comments ....

As you will have realised by looking at my work, my portraiture is not straightforward image shooting and I can create something for you that fits your personality and is totally original.
Please give me a call if you have any ideas you would like to take forward to create a stunning and totally individual set of images.

Justine's model portfolio

Time goes by too quickly, and I'm not blogging as often as I'd like to... I have several sets of images I'd like to share with you but everything else seems to take precedence.

I've been working with Justine for the last couple of months; she is just starting out as a model and we have been working together on images for her portfolio.

She is terrifically easy to work with, and has a good work ethic.  She has never left me waiting, or cancelled at the last moment like others do, follows my directing, and understands what I want to achieve from the shoot.

I do look forward to working more with her, and have a few more shoots in the pipeline... the weather at the moment is perfect for some moody work I've got in mind :)

Meanwhile, have a look at the images we've produced....

If you're a model and would like to discuss a portfolio with us, drop us an email.  We can offer competitive rates and creative location work to add interest to your portfolio of images.

Now logging off to prepare for a trip to attend to Mark Cleghorn's photoshop tour in the morning.  Will blog soon with more photographic goodness to look at... I promise :)

Out There - International street arts and circus festival

Time to blog about the Out There festival held here in our lovely Great Yarmouth last weekend....

I'm not being sarcastic about the location here. I think GY is great for many reasons, a source of great photographic inspiration, as well as being my current hometown, and also because Seachange Arts are investing their monies in making this town a centre for family entertainment to the local's benefit.

I went to the hub of the festival, St Georges' Park with my partner, slightly interested but expecting to be uninspired. I wasn't feeling at my best and thought I'd retreat back home sooner rather than later. However, we didn't stop shooting for most of the day, only stopping as an appointment with a local model for a photoshoot was beckoning.

The metal like dragons were fantastic with their gracefully suspended heads bobbing up and down to the delight of the people watching.

The street performers seemed to be enjoying themselves nearly as much as the kids who weren't sure what was coming on next.

This was one of my fav street acts. A milk float set up with two sides of percussive milk bottles directed by the dj on the mixers :)

And these were by far the best performers of the festival for me, the French act 'Les 3 points de Suspension' who presented a farcical act about the death of the philsopher Sophocles... It was really a test for political correctness as people here are used to things being toned down to the point of not being funny anymore, but it was great to see the players manage to get the audience to participate. A five star circus show I thought :)

Finally, a traditional Victorian circus act to close our interesting afternoon...

Roll on 'Out There' 2010 :)

Event photography - Family day organised by Seachange Arts

Time flies by so quick. It's been two weeks sans a new entry to my blog. There's a lot happening at the moment, as I'm searching for second shooting opportunities. But I'm also shooting whatever I can and whatever inspires me so I have a big folder of photographs I need to look at and work on.

Today I'm going to blog about a recent event I covered for Seachange Arts a while back. Seachange are keen to organize family oriented multicultural and artistic activities so I went along shooting their Family Day event at St George's Park in Great Yarmouth.

It's always very interesting to photograph events as you need to be best portraying the sense of the event in work you present to the client. I achieved this aim as Seachange liked the set and purchased the photographs, which I was really pleased about.

Hope you like this set and look forward to your comments.

the magic donkey

For those who upload/follow flickrworld on a regular basis this name may something...

The magic donkey is the name given to the algorithim that scours many tens of thousands of daily uploads to flickr to come up with the most 'interesting' 500 at that point in time. 'Explore' is a word many have strong feelings for... be they love or hate.

Some people complain about people 'learning' how to get to explore and taking advantage, others enjoy being 'explored', others really don't care...

I did'nt connect the magic donkey concept to my latest flickr upload until somebody wrote a comment about this to my photo...

...it's just a photo that I took at the weekend on the beach at Great Yarmouth. I only live about half a mile away from the beach and being the island creature that I am, I love the sea and all that happens on the shore.

incidentally it did make it to Explore... it did seem like it would as it caused a flurry of hits and comments very quickly...

It does make me wonder whether people comment on my photos in exchange for comments' I've passed, but then I'm quite a bad flickrite... I comment very little (though I do fave a lot of work)... but then I only bother to pass comments on work that is really good

My line of thought is... "would I have been proud to have taken this photo, or would I have been able to take this at all"
this makes me comment very selectively
and i really don't have the time to be playing around....
flickr has helped me a lot as I have spent so much time absorbing visual information, and learnt to distinguish (or so I hope), the wheat from the chaff...
I have also made some friends... but I like flickr to remain for me what it is.... an inspiration, and a window to what others are doing... not any social networking thingy

I have other things to do at the moment ;)

really... though.. is my work interesting enough?
I hope so :)
